Mirantis to accelerate maturity of OpenStack via technology collaboration and investment led by Intel Capital as part of the ‘Cloud for All’ initiative, poised to disrupt $33 billion* cloud infrastructure market

Mountain View, CA — August 24, 2015 — Mirantis, the pure play OpenStack company, today announced a strategic technology and investment collaboration with Intel. The collaboration will focus on accelerating enterprise feature optimization in Mirantis’ OpenStack distribution and fueling enterprise OpenStack adoption. As part of the collaboration, Intel Capital led a $100 million funding round with new investor Goldman Sachs and existing investors August Capital, Insight Venture Partners, Ericsson, Sapphire Ventures (formerly SAP Ventures) and WestSummit Capital. The round includes a combination of equity and spending. The technical collaboration and work with Intel is part of Intel’s recent announcement focused on creating tens of thousands of new clouds, the Cloud for All initiative.

OpenStack cloud software, introduced in 2010, is built by a global development team of open source contributors under the guidance of the OpenStack Foundation.  According to Forrester, a technology research consultancy, OpenStack has quickly emerged as the fifth most popular cloud platform embraced by Global 2000 enterprises. The announcement today will help further adoption by easing deployment and integration in existing and new data centers worldwide.

“With Intel as our partner, we’ll show the world that open design, open development and open licensing is the future of cloud infrastructure software. Mirantis’ goal is to make OpenStack the best way to deliver cloud software, surpassing any proprietary solutions,” said Alex Freedland, co-founder and president of Mirantis. “Every industry is being disrupted by software. Smart enterprises are embracing the cloud to grow top line revenues and get new services to market faster. Mirantis is the only vendor 100 percent committed to only OpenStack.”

“Our investment in Mirantis is the next step in bringing open cloud infrastructure to the entire industry as part of Intel’s ‘Cloud for All’ initiative,” said Diane Bryant, senior vice president and general manager, Data Center Group, Intel. “As enterprises embrace public, private and hybrid cloud strategies, they need choices in their infrastructure software. OpenStack is an ideal open solution for cloud-native applications and services, and our collaboration with Mirantis is well placed to ensure the delivery of critical new enterprise features helping to create of tens of thousands of clouds.”

The technology collaboration with Intel will focus on adding increased capabilities for enterprise deployments.  Specifically the two companies will address: performance at scale, storage, network integration and support for big data.  Addressing these technology challenges will expand the use of OpenStack and ease adoption for Mirantis and Intel customers.

The deepened Intel collaboration follows a record-breaking year for Mirantis. Enterprise customers are running Mirantis OpenStack in production deployments in multiple industries to create new businesses, lower operating and capital expenditures and improve IT performance and efficiency:

  • A national retailer slashed hardware costs in half and doubled network performance;

  • A leading credit card company cut IT operational costs by 80 percent;

  • A leading Asian telecommunications company entered a new network-as-a-service business using SDN on Mirantis OpenStack;

Additionally, in 2014, Mirantis announced the largest Series B round in open source history ($100 million) and announced the largest public sale of OpenStack software ever ($30 million with Ericsson). Top line revenue grew 150 percent year-over-year and the company added more than 70 new enterprise customers. The company also opened new offices in Amsterdam, Austin, Grenoble, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
