Released on December 10, 2025, Mirantis k0rdent Enterprise 1.2.0 introduces key enhancements to reduce costs, simplify management of large multi-cloud environments, and improve flexibility and resilience for hosted control planes.

Highlights include ARM64 support, Regions, and hosted control planes backed by external databases. The release also delivers improvements to identity and access management, cluster lifecycle operations, and observability, making day-to-day operations more reliable and efficient.

ARM64 support for price/performance and efficiency

ARM64 is now common across cloud, data center, and edge, and—where workloads are compatible—can deliver lower costs, better power efficiency, and performance gains. A recent study showed that Tier 3 cloud providers report ~22% total cost reductions with ARM servers, driven by up to 41% power savings, ~24% fewer physical servers, and up to ~35% higher effective workload density. Customers have reported lower infrastructure costs and workload-dependent performance gains.

With k0rdent Enterprise 1.2.0 supporting ARM64 across virtual and bare-metal environments, teams can migrate compatible, cloud-native workloads incrementally and manage ARM64 and x86 from a single control plane.

Regions for large-scale operations, resilience, and risk management

k0rdent Enterprise 1.2.0 introduces Regions to simplify operating large, distributed environments with lower risk. Regions can be used to group clusters by geography, business unit, or compliance needs, and k0rdent Enterprise now provides built-in validation, regional monitoring, and region-aware backup and restore. Teams can propagate credentials to a region, back up and restore regions, and migrate child clusters between managers.

Regions also improve hosted control plane efficiency and isolation. Control plane components can run within a Region, keeping credentials scoped correctly, supporting data sovereignty, and reducing infrastructure overhead by consolidating controllers and workers within regional boundaries.

Hosted control planes backed by external databases

k0s Kubernetes (used for k0rdent child clusters) has long supported replacing etcd with an external relational database such as SQLite, Postgres, MySQL/MariaDB, or NATS, integrated via the Kine etcd shim. k0rdent Enterprise 1.2.0 now supports this configuration directly, enabling higher cluster density per management footprint and supporting hosted control plane replication and distribution for high availability, using the proven failover and durability of relational databases.

When combined with Region-based control planes, external databases allow more clusters to be managed without concentrating load in a single environment. This keeps operational and compliance boundaries clearly defined while improving resilience and scalability.

IAM Improvements

Mirantis k0rdent Enterprise 1.2.0 adds continuous identity management across management cluster(s) and child clusters, with built-in authentication, federation with enterprise identity providers, and support for external identity systems – providing a consistent way to manage users and permissions within existing identity and access management (IAM) strategies.

The new AccessManagement resource and dedicated RBAC Manager centralize and standardize access control, allowing platform teams to define how ClusterTemplates, ServiceTemplates, Credentials, and ClusterAuthentication objects are assigned to namespaces or tenants. This improves rollout consistency, keeps sensitive assets properly scoped, and reduces configuration drift as teams and organizations evolve.

Multi-cluster service and lifecycle enhancements

k0rdent Enterprise 1.2.0 introduces the ServiceSet API to manage dependent services and ordered upgrades. Teams can define rollout sequences for multi-component stacks, making upgrades easier.

MultiCluster Service improves dependency handling, requeue behavior, configurable timeouts, and new Helm options for large or slow environments. Charts now refresh automatically when related storage secrets change, reducing failures and manual retries. Provider updates across OpenStack, Azure, and AWS improve default cluster creation behavior, simplifying multi-cloud deployments.

Observability and telemetry improvements

k0rdent Observability and FinOps (KOF) dashboards now surface key k0rdent CRD metrics, raw metric views, and alerts for critical CAPI states, improving visibility into platform behavior and issues.

Promxy tuning (higher memory limits, bug fixes, and automatic CRD upgrades) keeps dashboards responsive under heavy query load. New and improved log collectors, including audit logs and key-value parsing, make fleet-wide activity easier to search and understand for troubleshooting and compliance.

Expanded telemetry controls, including local collectors and storage, regional telemetry, child cluster tracking, and enhanced monitoring for IPAM and k0rdent State Management (KSM),  give teams better control over data placement, costs, and early detection of networking and state-sync issues.

Mirantis k0rdent Enterprise 1.2.0 enables lower-cost, more resilient Kubernetes operations across large, multi-cloud environments. The release delivers practical improvements across architecture, lifecycle management, identity, and observability to support scalable, day-to-day operations.
