Mirantis is a Leader in the Omdia Universe: Container Management Products, 2024–25

omdia universe container management

We are thrilled to announce that Omdia has recognized Mirantis as a Leader in the Omdia Universe: Container Management Products, 2024–25. This comes fresh on the heels of Gartner’s favorable appraisal of Mirantis in the 2024 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Container Management, which also selected Mirantis as one of the top companies dominating the global market for Container Management — a burgeoning market that is expected to grow from $6 billion in revenue in 2024 to $13 billion in 2028. It is a great honor to have two of the world’s leading research and consulting firms validate the excellence and increasing traction of our enterprise container management solutions, especially with Mirantis as the only independent company recognized as a Leader by either firm.

Mirantis’ position as Leader, including “Best in class” in the areas of Core Development and Vendor Execution, is a significant improvement from the last time Omdia evaluated us, when we ranked as a Challenger alongside technology giants like Alibaba, AWS, and Huawei. This year, Omdia evaluated public cloud providers in a separate report, allowing Mirantis to emerge as one of three Leaders in the global market for standalone container management solutions, which aren’t tied to a specific public cloud provider and can deploy to a variety of public cloud, on-premises, and hybrid multi-cloud environments. In the Omdia Universe, Mirantis sits in the far upper right corner, ranking second highest in Strategy and Execution — slightly below SUSE and well above Red Hat and VMware. We also rank third greatest in Capability, just a tad less than Red Hat and SUSE.

Our independence is a crucial advantage, because it means we can be nimbler than other vendors and always put customers’ needs first. We don’t need to appease shareholders or a parent company. We don’t have the heavy bureaucracy of a technology giant, and we don’t peddle a cloud native stack built around our own Linux distribution. Rather, we listen to and focus on customers’ needs and deliver robust vendor-neutral container solutions, backing them with industry-leading SLAs and superior services expertise.

Best in class: Core Development

Omdia ranked Mirantis as “Best in class” in the area of Core Development, which it evaluated in terms of enterprise production capabilities, including:

  • Software application deployment and interoperability

  • Container management and control plane

  • Service mesh and infrastructure as code

  • Runtime and registries

  • Cluster fleet management

  • Networking

In the report, Omdia called out Mirantis Kubernetes Engine as one of our key strengths, commending the enterprise container platform for offering a “complete stack for operations, including ingress, RBAC, and networking,” and how we continually evolve its architecture and capabilities to deliver ”a comprehensive enterprise-focused container management solution.”

Other strengths Omdia highlighted include Mirantis Container Cloud, our multi-cluster platform, for helping enterprises with multi-cloud deployments to “avoid vendor lock-in and benefit from the advantages each cloud can offer.” Another strength Omdia called out was Lens, the world’s leading Kubernetes IDE, recognized for its Kubernetes management GUI and robust built-in features, including Helm, visualization, security, and integrated support.

Best in class: Vendor Execution

Mirantis also ranked “Best in class” in the area of Vendor Execution, which assesses various commercially-oriented parameters, including:

  • Wider impact on relations with partners and the ecosystem

  • Go-to-market strategy

  • Options for deploying the solution

  • Licensing flexibility

  • Depth of customer support

  • Evidence of ROI

The report highlighted Mirantis’ business model, centered around “reducing the cost and complexity of working with open source” and detailed how we execute this by “offering tested high availability architectures and giving customers the freedom to extend and customize the open source products” while also building guardrails to ensure smooth operations.

Analysts also recognized our fully-managed and self-managed enterprise support options, which both leverage Mirantis StackLight observability tools:

“Mirantis takes direct responsibility for maintaining the health of the customer infrastructure, which leads to tight integration between the customer care team and the developers. All the lessons learned in the field go back to inform developers. If customers opt to self-manage, they will use the same health and monitoring tools that the Mirantis team uses.”

Top Tier: Solution Breadth, Strategy & Innovation, and Market Momentum

Omdia gave Mirantis high scores in the areas of Solution Breadth, Market Momentum, and Strategy & Innovation, placing us in the Top Tier for each.

Solution Breadth

Analysts took a broad view across the Mirantis container product portfolio, examining not just Mirantis Kubernetes Engine, Mirantis Container Cloud, and Lens, but also open source container tools we lead development of, including k0s, a lightweight Kubernetes distribution; k0smotron, a Kubernetes control plane manager; and Lagoon, a developer-centric application delivery platform built by Mirantis subsidiary amazee.io

The report also considered the breadth of vendors’ out-of-the-box integrations, such as our FIPS 140-2 validated encryption for Mirantis Container Runtime and Mirantis Kubernetes Engine and StackLight observability tooling for Mirantis Container Cloud.

Strategy & Innovation

For the area of Strategy & Innovation, analysts assessed a variety of factors, including:

  • Evidence of innovation in the solution

  • Competitor differentiation

  • Focus on industry verticals

  • Support for the industries

Omdia recognized k0s as our “next-generation Kubernetes distribution,” and how it supports true control plane isolation to keep applications separate from cluster management and improve network security. The report also brought special attention to the next release of Mirantis Kubernetes Engine, which will be rearchitected around k0s and feature a Blueprint Operator to continuously ensure that clusters are stable and consistently configured according to use case-optimized deployment manifests.

Market Momentum

Omdia assessed our portfolio’s relevance to container management as well as our market penetration and reach, recognizing the important new clients we have gained since acquiring the Docker Enterprise business in 2019 and expanding our portfolio in subsequent years.

Mirantis has experienced tremendous growth in our enterprise container solution deployments in the last 12 months, primarily for Mirantis Kubernetes Engine. Additionally, Lens has now grown to 1.5 million users, and many leading companies in financial services, technology, manufacturing, and other industries have 100 or more Lens users. Of the Fortune 100, one-third are Mirantis customers.

Gratitude to our Customers, Partners, and Communities

It is a great honor to be named a Leader in the container management market and to have both Omdia and Gartner validate the excellence and increasing traction of our solutions. We are grateful to all our customers, partners, and the open source communities we work with for helping to evolve our enterprise container solutions into the innovative and transformative solutions they are today, and we look forward to further collaboration in shaping the next generation of our container offerings.
