Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes First to Deliver Enterprise-Grade OpenStack Caracal
Oct 17, 2024
MOSK 24.3 adds advanced management capabilities, enabling easier maintenance and greater customization in deployments
CAMPBELL, Calif., October 17, 2024 –Mirantis, providing organizations with total control over their strategic infrastructure using open-source software, today announced the release of Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes (MOSK) 24.3, which delivers enterprise-ready and fully supported OpenStack Caracal, featuring enhancements tailored for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC).
The process to make MOSK enterprise-ready included more than 3,000 tests and there were more than 300 software patches applied in this new release.
OpenStack is witnessing a notable increase in adoption, primarily due to its strong positioning as a cost-effective alternative to VMware and its exceptional capability to support workloads related to AI, machine learning (ML), and HPC. A report from Mordor Intelligence indicates that the OpenStack market is projected to reach $22.81 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow to $91.44 billion by 2029, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32%.
“With MOSK 24.3, we're delivering the latest innovations in open source virtualization, which we’ve hardened and secured for enterprises, combined with exclusive features from Mirantis that help enterprises optimize and ensure that their deployments are robust and easy to operate,” said Shaun O’Meara, chief technology officer, Mirantis. “This provides more flexibility and control while at the same time helping save time and reduce cost.”
MOSK 24.3 provides control over private cloud infrastructure with a new system to manage host operating system (OS) configurations. This allows operators to define operating system settings through MOSK's lifecycle management API, eliminating the need for separate configuration tools like Ansible or Salt, and enabling automated, centralized GitOps-style infrastructure management. When applied in a cloud of several hundred hypervisors, the new system can save operations teams weeks of work.
The latest lifecycle management enhancements provide cloud operators with a single API for end-to-end updates of a MOSK cluster, offering valuable insights into the estimated duration and impact of each step, making it easier to plan maintenance activities, with less risk. Operators can organize servers into “update groups” for fast updates without impacts from events like virtual machine (VM) or network connectivity interruptions – even in large, complex clouds.
MOSK 24.3 offers cloud operators enhanced flexibility by allowing them to integrate the MOSK block storage service (OpenStack Cinder) with the enterprise storage appliances of their choice.
MOSK enables on-premises cloud infrastructure for cloud-native and traditional applications, ensuring reliability and complete control over application data. MOSK provides automated management of the underlying infrastructure, from hardware provisioning to software configuration, as well as centralized logging, monitoring, and alerting.
